That’s not to say sometimes the difficulty won’t spike hard from time to time but you’ll have every opportunity before a difficult boss level to build up your chances of survival. You’ll never come across a level where you cannot progress without the items you have. Levels are randomly generated as before but the systems at play working out the paths you can take are are incredibly fair. There’s a lot more additions and subtle changes to the gameplay that make the experience a lot more enjoyable. Spelunky 2 has been out for a few months now on the Switch and I feel like given how much I’m still going back to it and slowly letting go of Hades ( check out that review here) now’s a good a time as any to dig down into the caves.Īt its core Spelunky 2 is still the same fast paced roguelike platformer as Spelunky 1, once you’ve blasted through the tutorial ( and changed the controls back to the same as Spelunky 1 in the options) the loop of exploring to get down through the levels to progress is very much the same. There’s just something about the punishing failure in the games that lends itself to being less frustrating when it’s not on a big screen for others to see.

Despite not being very good, I’ve always had a blast playing it and the thing is Spelunky was always a game series that I’ve felt works best in a handheld form.

I’ve previously reviewed the Switch port of Spelunky 1 ( over here) Spelunky 2 on the PS4 was a no-brainer for me and one release day I was happily dying and attempting to get through it over and over again. I’ve played days worth of hours on the PSVita and every port it had. The question-submitter suggested a Switch double-pack, which I think would be perfect.I love Spelunky, It has been my go to roguelike for years now. Now that the game is out on Switch we can look into it more.” “It just takes time to set up, which we haven’t had a lot of this year. “I’d love to do it and it’s great to hear that there’s interest for it,” he said. The developer also explained that while they can’t go into specifics due to NDAs, Spelunky 2 won’t get the progress-sync feature on PlayStation, so this will be Switch/PC only.Įlsewhere in the AMA, Spelunky designer Derek Yu expressed a desire to, at some point, do a physical edition.
“Some stats such as runs finished are also merged, but the merge isn’t perfect, so if you kill four enemies on Switch and then three on Steam, it would only show four (depending on the order of the syncs).” “So for example, by using cross-progress you can unlock an achievement on Steam and get it on Switch or vice versa,” according to Guillermo.

Rather than move your save data from one platform to the next (in this case, from Spelunky 2 on PC to Nintendo Switch), this feature will “merge” your progress.

Responding to questions in a Reddit AMA, Blitworks’ Guillermo NWDD said that the developers “plan to include this feature on PC in the next update, which will be coming after the next patch lands on Nintendo Switch (1.23).” It’s being tested right now. Some players have noticed a cross-progress / data-sync feature in the Switch version of Spelunky 2, but it doesn’t appear to work yet. I hope your runs go well! The new ports launched today on the eShop, and while I haven’t tested them out, the early impressions - including chatter about a smooth frame rate - sound encouraging. Cross-progress isn’t implemented just yetįor those of you who are planning to crack into Spelunky or Spelunky 2 for the first time on Nintendo Switch, I’m excited and nervous for you.
